How to prepare for an Outdoor Holiday Session
Lots of clients ask me the best way to prepare for a session with small children, but especially one that might be in the cold outside. Here are my best tips!
Let the kids know a few days before, and proactive listening to directions and smiling genuine smiles! Tell them to say something other than "cheese" try "stinky feet!" "Candy" "Ice cream!" or other things they might like
Prepare to dress in layers. Long sleeve, sweater, jacket and hat. If you can have all those coordinating, so if they have to wear the jackets or hats in the photos, it still looks cohesive.
Bring lots of snacks and drinks. Small easy snacks are great like fruit snacks or puffs. Things that are easy to give them and they can eat quickly without too many crumbs on their face.
Have a video or song ready on your phone to distract and bring smiles
Bring a small toy or object they love. I have the parent either hold these over my head during the shoot to have them look my way. Or sometimes they like to hold the object, so I like to make it appropriate for the photo. For example in the fall, I have a small pumpkin for the kids to hold so it still looks nice in the photos.
Be reparteed to work for smiles! When all else fails, I get the parents or other caregivers on board with dancing singing, jumping around. Whatever it takes for the most genuine smile.
I hope that helps! The faster we get the smiles, the faster we have you out of the cold! Happy Holidays!
